League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that pits two teams of five players against each other in a fantasy-themed world. The game is interesting because it offers a variety of champions with different abilities and play styles, as well as different game modes and strategies to suit different preferences and skill levels. League of Legends also has a rich lore and a vibrant community of players, streamers, and content creators.

League of Legends began as a college student project of Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck, who became the eventual co-founders of Riot Games. The title was intended to be an optimized successor to the wildly popular Warcraft 3 mod Dota.

After three years of work on the game, on October 27, 2009, they finally started testing it out at conventions. The game was initially met with skepticism and criticism, as many players felt it was too similar to Dota or too simplistic. However, Riot Games persisted and improved the game with frequent updates and feedback from the community.

The game was officially released on October 27, 2009, as a free-to-play title with a microtransaction system that allowed players to purchase cosmetic items and new champions. The game quickly gained popularity and attracted millions of players from around the world.

League of Legends has since evolved into one of the most successful and influential video games of all time, with a daily peak of 8 million concurrent players, a rich lore and a vibrant community of players, streamers, and content creators. The game has also spawned several spin-off titles, such as League of Legends: Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, and Ruined King: A League of Legends Story.

League of Legends is also the world’s largest esport, with an international competitive scene consisting of multiple regional leagues that culminate in an annual League of Legends World Championship. The 2019 event registered over 100 million unique viewers, peaking at a concurrent viewership of 44 million during the finals. The game has been broadcast on livestreaming websites such as Twitch, YouTube, Bilibili, and on cable television sports channel ESPN.
